Voice Changes, Changing Diapers, and Having Your Dad as a Choir Teacher with Zane Gutierrez | Ep 25

Season 3: Episode 7

Dear Listeners,

This week’s episode of The Choir Guys Podcast is extra special — because our guest is none other than Danny’s son, Zane Gutierrez!

Zane is a seventh grader in our Varsity Tenor/Bass Choir, a cross-country medal-winner, chess champ, and proud Knicks fan (which truly shows endurance and character 😅). He also happens to have a killer tenor voice and has been hanging around rehearsals since he could crawl — literally.

In this episode, Zane gives us the inside scoop on:

  • What it’s really like having your dad as your choir teacher

  • The most bizarre things he’s witnessed in class so far

  • Who has the better voice (and… the better soccer skills)

  • And yes — how long Danny’s warm-up stories actually last 👀

It’s heartfelt, hilarious, and full of those “this kid has been raised by a choir teacher” moments. We’ve waited a long time to have this one — and it did not disappoint.

Thanks for supporting the pod and helping us continue celebrating choir kids, choir teachers, and everything in between.Listen now on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!

This week’s Teacher Tip Thursday comes from Caleb Zustiak!

Caleb’s exercise — “p t k f s sh brr” — is both a pronunciation and breathing drill. Have students repeat it four times in a row, then turn it into a round by section: basses start, then add the next group, and so on. Get louder… then quieter.

It’s a fun, focused way to energize your singers and fine-tune articulation at the same time!

November 18 - Dustin Cates joins The Choir Guys!

Our next episode of The Choir Guys Podcast features one of the kindest, most genuine people in the choral world — Dr. Dustin Cates!

Dustin is the Director of Choral Activities at Temple University, a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a proud Kansas City native whose love for people shines through every note he conducts.

In this episode, Blake and Danny talk with Dustin about his journey from KC to Temple, his experience as an adoptive parent, and how every teacher can help make their classroom a more welcoming and inclusive space.

It’s an inspiring, heartfelt conversation that reminds us all why we teach — and why music matters.

🎧 Tune in November 18th on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts!
